Animal Care Center opened its doors on June 1st, 1983. The practice was built as a two doctor practice by Dr. Larry Knight and Dr. William Wheat. The original facility was built with the idea of comprehensive veterinary medical and surgical care. The practice was initially comprised of approximately 60% small animal and 40% large animal. Dr. Darryl Bubrig joined the staff in 1988 and in 1990 he became half owner when he purchased Dr. Knight’s portion of the practice. Since that time we have prospered and grown into the largest non referral veterinarian clinic on the Northshore. Our hospital now has 7 Veterinarians with over 100 years of experience and an additional support staff of twenty part- and full-time employees. Our practice is now limited to small animals, mainly dogs and cats, as well as some exotic species, including small mammals, reptiles, and avian species.
In 2001 operations were expanded by purchasing property in Ponchatoula on Campbell Lane. We remodeled an existing building and in June, 2002 the sister site to Animal Care, Pet Care Center was opened.
Animal Care Center was remodeled and expanded in 2006. This clinic is a full service veterinary hospital providing many services to clients including surgery, medicine, grooming, and boarding. We have a full range of diagnostic equipment such as an in-house laboratory, radiography, state-of-the-art anesthetic monitoring equipment, tonometry, EKG, surgical laser, and oxygen therapy. We carry a large supply of nutritional products including premium pet foods as well as prescription diets. The pharmacy is fully stocked with a large inventory of the latest medications and supplements. The new boarding suites offer luxurious accommodations for those who want a little extra for their pet while staying with us. The hospital is computerized and and networked throughout the facility as well as between both clinics.
Our doctors are knowledgeable of the newest and most effective forms of diagnosis and treatment. They regularly attend both state and national continuing education conferences and seminars. Routine staff meetings and seminars are an integral part of our practice and help keep our entire staff abreast of new practices, procedures, and products. The doctors and clinic conform to all license requirements.
The practice encourages the doctors and staff to participate in community organizations because we feel that it is very important to interact with the community in which we serve. We routinely support and sponsor several organizations in Hammond and Ponchatoula, including, Kiwanis, Relay for Life, Special Olympics, Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation, and many local school sports teams and other organizations.
Throughout the years Animal Care Center and Pet Care Center have provided the very best veterinary care possible to our community. We look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come!
